Rogers Cup Toronto 2010: Canada’s Premier Tennis Tournament

The Rogers Cup tournament is not as well known as the Grand Slams, but it is older than all the other tennis tournaments, barring Wimbledon and the US Open.

This event, the premier tennis tournament of Canada, has been conducted from 1881 onwards, and is considered as being among the best organized tournaments on the ATP tour.

The Rogers Cup is a Masters 1000 tournament presented by National Bank, and carries US $ 3 mn in prize money. The top tennis stars take part every year, in the tournament that was won by Andy Murray of Britain, last year. With his 2009 win, Murray was catapulted to World No. 2.

In 2008, Rafael Nadal took home the prestigious trophy. Bjorn Borg, John McCenroe, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Roger Federer are among the other luminaries of tennis who have won this tournament, which is hosted in alternate years at Toronto and Montreal. This year’s venue is Rexall Centre, in Toronto.

The last Canadian to win this tournament was Faye Urban Mlacak who won the women’s singles and doubles crowns in 1969. Her doubles partner was Vicki Berner.

The Rogers Cup 2010 tournament is currently underway. It began on Auguat 7, and will culminate on August 15, in a grand final. A galaxy of stars, including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Djokovic, and Berdych are taking part, this year.

This is Nadal’s first tournament after he won Wimbledon, in July. He won the Rogers Cup tournament in Montreal, in 2005 and in Toronto, in 2008.
