US Open QF Preview: Clijsters Vs Stosur

| September 7, 2010

Kim Clijsters and Samatha Stosur meet today, Tuesday, September 7, in a quarter final of the US Open that promises to be an exhibition of attacking tennis by two women in form.

Head to head, Clijsters has a clear advantage over her Australian rival. The Belgian has won all the three matches played between the two, in the past.

Defending champion Clijsters is yet to drop set at the ongoing US Open. Contrastingly, Stosur had to battle hard for 2 hours and 40 minutes against Dementieva to reach the quarter-finals.

In fact, Dementieva took the second set of that match at 6-0, and that is all the more curious given Stosur’s powerful serve. However, Stosur did well to rally from that point onwards, to take the final set and a place in the quaretr-finals.

The Australian player demonstrated how tough she is mentally, at the French Open, earlier this year, beating Justine Henin, Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic, in successive matches to reach the final.

However, the US Open has not been Stosur’s favourite surface. She has appeared six times at this tournament and never got past the second round, before this year.

On the other hand, Clijsters has had an 18 match winning streak at the US Open.

While Stosur’s strength is her serve, Clijsters can bank on her powerful ground strokes. Also, Stosur has a relatively weak back-hand, and the defending champion will be looking to exploit that.

Fifth seeded Stosur could take a set off the defending champion, but it is hard to see Clijsters losing this one.

This match will take place at 19:00 Eastern Daylight Time, immediately ahead of the mens’ round of 16 match between Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez..
