St Mirren’s good work at Motherwell was undone in a tame display against Kilmarnock last Saturday, but with bottom club Hamilton Accies unable to capitalise on any St Mirren slip-ups, the consequences for the Buddies are not that serious. If things continue for the remainder of the season like they have been up until now, the St Mirren’s safety in the top league is assured — surely more than most people expected when Danny Lennon elected to pack the side with Cowdenbeath players.

Rangers come into this game fresh from a second defeat at Celtic Park in the space of just a few days. That defeat means the treble is no longer a possibility for them. Of more immediate concern for the Light Blues though is the fate, in terms of suspensions, of their 3 ordered-off players, El-Hadji Diouf (2 bookings, the second one after the final whistle), Steven Whittaker (2 bookings), and Madjid Bougherra (2 bookings).

St Mirren’s last 5 game record reads…

[St Mirren’s score first]

26 February Away 0-2 vs Kilmarnock (SPL)

23 February Away 1-0 vs Motherwell (SPL)

20 February Home 0-1 vs Hibernian (SPL)

12 February Home 3-3 vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPL)

5 February Away 2-1 vs Ayr United (Scottish Cup)

Rangers’ last 5 game record reads…

[Rangers’ score first]

2 March Away 0-1 vs Celtic (Scottish Cup)

27 February Home 4-0 vs St Johnstone (SPL)

24 February Away 2-2 vs Sporting Lisbon (Uefa Europa League)

20 February Away 0-3 vs Celtic (SPL)

17 February Home 1-1 vs Sporting Lisbon (Uefa Europa League)

If Rangers could pick a game to help them regroup and recover after the trauma of Celtic Park, it would be this, or maybe Accies. St Mirren will not be going into this with any sense at all that they can win it. They will say they will, but they won’t.

Expect the Buddies to feel the Rangers backlash..
