The Northern Irishman has a post-Tiger following, and the pressure of expectation will be huge as he tees off at 09:09 BST on Thursday, in an attempt to top a field of 156 golfers at the Open Championship. Other than the mental challenge, Mcllroy will also have to contend with the Royal St George’s links that is not expected to suit Mcllroy’s style of play.
Football: USA, Japan to clash in Women’s World Cup Final
USA and Japan have set up a final clash at the FIFA Women’s World Cup final to be played on Sunday, with identical 3-1 wins over France and Sweden. While USA won the inaugural world cup event in 1999, this will be Japan’s first entry into the final.
Football: Aston Villa Winger Downing’s Move To Liverpool Finalised
Liverpool have agreed to pay Aston Villa £20m, the fee the Villa Park outfit have demanded for their winger Downing’s move to Anfield. In other transfer news, Tottenham’s Luca Modric has become the latest want-away, joining the likes of Man City’s Tevez and Arsenal’s Fabregas. Cycling: Cavendish Wins 11th Stage At Tour
Mark Cavendish earned the green jersey after he won his third stage at the Tour de France, on Wednesday. The British rider who had earlier won the fifth and seventh stages and had been narrowly beaten by Greipel in the tenth became the points leader after sprinting to the finish in torrential rain.
Olympics: Tottenham’s Legal Action Could Kill Bid For 2017 World Championship
British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson has warned that Tottenham’s protracted legal bid to acquire the Olympic Stadium could scuttle Britain’s bid to host the world Athletics Championship in 2017. Robertson has urged Tottenham to drop their legal challenge of the Olympic Park Legacy Company’s decision to award the Stadium to West Ham. Britain was set to lose their 2017 championship bid if the future of the stadium wasn’t settled before September 1.
