EPL 2011-12: Schedule, Match Times, Pre-Season Preview

EPL Update as on 5th November 2011: As we approach Gameweek 11, Manchester City tops the premier league table with 28 points.

Newcastle has been in top form with wins in the last two games against Stoke City and Wigan Athletic and is on the third sport behind Man United. Meanwhile, after the drubbing against Man City, Manchester United is recovering and won their last game against Everton. They take on Sunderland this weekend, who is aiming to finish in the top ten.

Chelsea and Tottenham occupy the 4th and 5th spot respectively with 19 points.

Arsenal have upped their form with 3 consecutive wins but Liverpool have not been in-form and have to work on their game to finish off in the top 5. The two teams are languishing with 18 and 16 points respectively.

EPL Update as on 1st October 2011: After 7 weeks of exciting matches in the English Premier League, last year’s winners Manchester United share the top  spot with their rivals Manchester City, with 19 points. Both teams have played 7 matches and so far have lived up to their reputation.

On the other hand, Arsenal and Liverpool are having a tough season. Liverpool have had sh0cking losses against Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur. In their 6 matches, Arsenal have enjoyed just 2 wins and managed to eke out 7 points.

The surprise team have been Newcastle; after 7 matches, they have garnered 15 points and not lost a single match (4 wins, 3 draws). Alan Pardew, who took charge as their manager in December 2010, has reason to be happy with his team’s performance so far.

First Week Update: After playing their first games, Bolton, Man United and Wolves top the table with 3 points each.

Manchester United won a record 19th league title last season, winning 80 points from 38 games. The Old Trafford squad also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League against Barcelona, played at Wembley, a match they lost 3-1.

The 2011-12 English Premier League season is round the corner, and a veritable feast is in store for football fans. The season officially begins on Saturday, August 14, with seven games scheduled. Reigning champions Manchester United will however not begin their Premiership campaign till Sunday, August 15, when they visit West Brom Albion. Ahead of the Premiership, Manchester United are due to play a few friendly games in the United States, including one against Barcelona on July 30.

But the most interesting pre-season encounter should come against Manchester City in the traditional the Community Shield opener. Last year, United beat the then reigning Premier League champions, Chelsea, 3-1, in the Community Shield game.

Their neighbours, Manchester City, beat United 1-0, in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, a trophy that City made their own, beating Stoke City in the final. Manchester United also reached the 5th round of the Football League Cup, a match they lost to West Ham.

Can Manchester City stake their claim to the Premiership by beating United, this time around?

So, who will win the Premier League this year? Will it be Manchester United again, or will they be trumped by their neighbours, Manchester City? Chelsea will want to prove a point or two, with a new manager at the helm. Arsenal would want to prove that they are not in decline. Or there could be an entirely new champion team biding their time. Perhaps, it will be Liverpool’s turn, this year, or Tottenham Hotspurs, or even Aston Villa, or some team that’s not on our radar right now?
