The Community Shield is the traditional precursor to the football season played between the reigning Premier League and FA Cup champions.
This year Manchester United and Manchester City, being the reigning Premier League and FA Cup champions, will clash for the FA Community Shield, which was earlier known as the Charity Shield.
The match is expected to see a full house at Wembley, with about 70,000 Mancs expected to turn out to cheer their teams. Wembley was built in 1924, and was inaugurated by King George V, and hosted the British Empire Exhibition in the year of its inauguration. The stadium has hosted England internationals and FA Cup Finals for 70 years.
Last year, Chelsea, the then reigning Premier League champions played against Manchester United, the then reigning FA Cup champions, and the game ended 3-1 in United’s favour.
Manchester City have been on the upswing in recent years, with a huge infusion of investment in good players, thanks to their rich new owners from UAE. The FA Cup in 2011 was their first major honour in 35 years, and they managed to beat Manchester United 1-0 en route to the final where they met and beat Stoke City.
United will seek revenge for that loss, with no love lost between the supporters of the two sides. Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David De Gea are some of the young summer signings who will turn out for Manchester United ths year. The match will give football fans a look at how the teams are shaping up ahead of the season. Unlike last year, when the FIFA World Cup preceded the season, the players will have had better rest, this year. Coaches of both teams would be concerned with the state of the Wembley pitch, as they would want to avoid injuries to key players.
For City, the game will be another opportunity to show how far they have come, as a major force in English club football.
