Born on November 27, 1987, Giraldo is six years younger than Federer who was born on August 21, 1981. Federer has been in excellent form throughout the year, without actually winning a Grand Slam.

In his latest tournament at the Cincinnati Masters, Federer was beaten in straight sets 6-2, 7-6, in the quarter-finals, by Tomas Berdych. Before that loss, Roger had cruised through the first two rounds, beating Del Potro and Blake in straight sets.

Before Cincinnati, Federer lost to Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, in the second round, at Montreal, a match that the Frenchman won 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. In the first round, Federer had made short work of V Pospisil, winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

Ahead of that, Federer had helped Switzerland to a 5-0 clean sweep over Portugal in the Davis Cup. In his only match, Federer beat Portugal’s Machado by the score-line of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

In the tournament before that, at Wimbledon, Federer cruised through the first three rounds, beating the likes of Mannarino, Nalbandian and Youzhny, before falling to Tsonga in the round of 16. Tsonga won 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a marathon match.

Giraldo is coming off a 6-1, 6-3 hard court loss to Andy Roddick in the second round at Winston Salem, after beating Kavcic in the first round, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

He did a bit better than that on the clay surface at Kitzbuhel, Austria, losing in the quarter-finals to Montanes, after beating Brands and Fognini in the first two rounds. His previous three tournaments, all on clay,  did not go quite as well, with a second round loss to Haider-Maurer at Gstaad, preceded by a first round loss at Hamburg to Nieminen, and a second round loss at Stuttgart to Kubot.
