Djokovic has arguably reached the prime of his career becoming, during 2011, the world’s number one ranked player; he achieved this when he entered the Wimbledon finals, a match he won against Nadal, in four sets. His record for the year is 58-2, including his first round win over Ireland’s Nyland; Djokovic won after Nyland retired hurt with the world number one leading 5-1 in the second set, having won the first set. His two losses were to Federer and Murray .

In the run up to the US Open, at the Cincinnati Open, Djokovic lost in the final to Britain’s Andy Murray, injury causing him to concede a walkover to his rival, midway through the match. Earlier, he cruised in the earlier rounds against the likes of Harrison, Stepanek and Monfils; Djokovic was himself the beneficiary of a walkover from Berdych in the semi-finals.

In the earlier tournament at Montreal, Djokovic beat USA’s Mardy Fish for the title, having beaten Davydenko, Cilic, Monfils and Tsonga in the earlier rounds.

Carlos Berlocq, born on march 2, 1983, is four years older than his Serbian rival. Berlocq had an impressive first round win over Riba-Madrid, a match he won by a score-line of 7-5, 6-0, 6-1. Berlocq played just one hard court tournament in the run up to the US Open. In that tournament, at Winston Salem, USA, the Argentine had mixed fortunes, losing in straight sets to Dolgopolov in the second round after winning a walkover midway through his first round encounter with Haider-Maurer.

Berlocq’s clay court season was mediocre, with first round losses at San Benedetto and Bastad, followed by a second round exit at Hamburg, before putting up a better show at Umq, Croatia, where he lost in the quarter-finals to Ferrero.
