US Open 2011 Second Round Preview: Nadal Vs Mahut
World number two, Spain’s Rafael Nadal will face world number 99, France’s Nicolas Mahut, in the second round of the US open on Friday, September 2, 2011.
Interestingly, Nadal lost in the only previous meeting he had with Mahut on a tennis court; that match was at London’s Queens Club in 2007.
Nadal is bidding for his second Grand Slam of 2011, having won the French Open, earlier in the year.
In the first round, Nadal got the better of Golubev in a hard-fought three set victory 6-3, 7-6, 7-5; Mahut won his first round against Farah in a five-set thriller, coming from a two-set deficit. The final score-line in Mahut’s favour was 3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0.

For Nadal 2011 has been a mixed year, with injury and inconsistency causing concerns. At the Cincinnati Masters, ahead of the US Open, Nadal was beaten by USA’s Mardy Fish in the third round; earlier the Spaniard beat Benneteau and Verdasco in the previous two rounds. In Montreal, before Cincinnati, Nadal crashed out in the first round losing to Dodig.
Nadal’s world number one ranking was taken by Djokovic at Wimbledon, to whom the Spaniard lost in the final, with the score reading 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, to Djokovic. Before the final, Nadal had cruised through the previous rounds beating the likes of Sweeting, Muller, Del Potro, Fish and Murray.
Mahut began well at the Cincinnati Masters, ahead of the US Open. He won the first two rounds with relative ease against Rieschick and Grannolers-Pujol, before falling to Fish in straight sets in the quarter-finals. Mahut began his hard court preparation at Granby Canada where he had a reasonable run, reaching the quarter-finals that he lost to France’s Clement. Earlier, Mahut had easy outings against Pokrajac and Milton in the first two rounds, both of which matches he won in straight sets.
After Granby, Mahut played at Atlanta, and began well by beating Berankis in straight sets in the first round. Then he exited the tournament in the second round beaten by Mardy Fish, also in straight sets.
