ATP World Tour Finals 2011: How Roger Federer Fared in 2010

| November 13, 2011

The ATP World Tour Finals scheduled to be played at London’s O2 arena, from November 20 to 27, will officially bring down the curtain on the 2011 season. Defending champion Roger Federer has shown a recent return to title winning form and all eyes will be on him as he takes on the tough rivals from among the world’s top eight ranked players. this is how Roger Federer fared in last year’s tournament:

Day 1 : November 21, 2010

Drawn in Group B, Federer met Ferrer, in his first round robin match. Ferrer had met Federer in the final of the tournament in 2007. Federer was off to a brilliant start, and within 15 minutes, was up 4–0. Ferrer broke Federer’s serve in the fifth game. Federer broke back in the sixth, and served out the set in the seventh, to take it 6-1. In a more closely-fought second set, Federer prevailed 6-4, on the back of a solitary service break, to record his 30th win at the season ender.

Day 3 : November 23, 2010

Roger Federer took a step closer to the semi-finals by beating Andy Murray in straight sets. Murray, who struggled with his serve during the match, was broken by Federer in the third game of the first set; Federer took the set 6-4, and in the second, raced to 4-0, after breaking Murray’s serve twice. Federer eventually won 6-4, 6-2.

Day 5 : November 25, 2010

Federer won his last round robin match against compatriot Robin Söderling to record three wins in three matches in his group and qualify for the semi-finals. Federer broke in the third game of the first set and it appeared to be a one-sided match at that point. But Soderling fought back to take the set to a tie break that Federer won. Though Soderling broke back after Federer broke first to go 2-1 up, the second set did not pan out the way the first one had, and Federer won the final score-line of 7–6(5), 6–3.

Day 7 : November 27, 2010

Federer defeated Djokovic in straight sets to set up a final with his Spanish rival. The Swiss legend wreaked revenge against the Serb for his semi-final defeat to the Serb at the US Open, breaking Djokovic’s serve four times, to win 6-1, 6-4, in a patently one-sided contest to set up a final against Rafael Nadal.

Day 8 : November 28, 2010

Nadal fought back to take the second set 6-3, after the Swiss ace had taken the first, by the same score. But eventually, Federer was the better player on the day, and vanquished Nadal 6-1, in the deciding set. Federer by beating top seed Rafael Nadal became only the third player to win five ATP World Tour Finals, after Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl. The match lasted 1 hour and 37 minutes, with the final score reading 6–3, 3–6, 6–1.
