Liverpool transfer rumours: Dempsey lined up as a possible replacement for flop Andy Carroll

| July 12, 2012

Liverpool are targeting Fulham forward Clint Dempsey to bolster their toothless attack. A disappointing eighth place finish in the last season’s premier league saw their manager and former Liverpool legend ‘King’ Kenny depart from the club. Brendan Rodgers, who took over the reins recently, has put in place a strategy to revive the struggling Merseysiders.

29-year old striker Clint Dempsey is on Rodgers’ radar and considering his age, the American might be cheap to come by. He has been instrumental in Fulham’s ninth place finish last season, just behind the Reds. With 29 goals and nine assists to his name in the last two seasons, he is definitely a genuine threat in front of the goal and could just be the catalyst Liverpool need.

The Anfield side are reportedly readying a $ 11 million bid for the striker. If the move materializes, Dempsey would become Rodgers’ first major signing this season. However, this move could also see Andy Carroll relegated to the bench.  The 23-year old England international has never been able to replicate his form when he made an eye-popping $ 35 million move from Newcastle to Liverpool last season. Having scored only 6 goals in 42 appearances, he has been a major disappointment for the Reds.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are said to be preparing a $10 million bid to bring back Carroll and if rumours are to believed, Carroll could well be on his way out before the start of this season.

With Arsenal, Spurs and a host of other clubs said to be interested in Dempsey, Fulham might play hard ball and would be looking to make a killing in the transfer. Rodgers, meanwhile, has lined up Italian Fabio Borini as a possible back-up should he miss out on Dempsey. The 21-year old Roma star scored nine goals for his club last season and is touted to be one of the biggest prospects for the future. Will Liverpool be able to match Roma’s asking price of $17 million for Borini? Or would they go for someone whom they could afford? Rodgers has an unenviable task in his hands.
