As many as 204 National Olympic committee member nations are expected to send their athletes to the London Games, with 200 already having qualified their participation, as of July 6, 2012. Athletes of the Dutch Antilles – whose membership was withdrawn by the IOC in June — will participate independently under the Olympic flag. Some countries, namely, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, Mauritania and Timor-Leste, are yet to qualify.
The Olympic torch relay runs that began on May 19 will continue up to the official start of the Games, on July 27. The relays involve about 8,000 participants carrying the Olympic torch over a distance of about 8,000 miles.
The closing ceremony will include a handover by London Mayor Boris Johnson to Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes. Rio de Janeiro is due to host the 2016 Olympics.
