US Open 2012 : Seeding, Schedule and Prize Money

| July 14, 2012

After the French Open and Wimbledon, the 2012 edition of the US Open has followed suit with a 11 percent increase in singles’ prize money. Players who fail to make it past the first round will enjoy the majority of the hike; they will walk home with $23,000, as opposed to $19,000, the previous year, which is effectively a 21 percent increase. There is a 19 percent increase for those who exit in the second round.

In addition to receiving $1.9 million each, which is $100,000 more than the previous year, the men’s and women’s champions will receive a bonus based on their performances in the tournaments leading up to the US Open.

The two preceding grand slams set the trend of allocating a large chunk of the increase in prize money to those players who lose in the early rounds after the top four seeds Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray met with the Grand Slam officials in March and presented their case stating that an increase in prize money would help lower ranked players cover training costs.

The officials at the French Open and Wimbledon responded, accordingly, by increasing the total prize money by 7 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Most of the increase was directed to the early rounds.

The total prize money of the US Open has increased from $23.9 million to $25.5 million.

USTA has also announced the creation of the “US Open Sportsmanship award” which will be awarded to one male player and one female player who best demonstrate excellence in sportsmanship throughout the US Open.
