Srikkanth Forced VVS Laxman to Retire, Says Ganguly
Former India captain Saurav Ganguly has opened up a can of worms by making a controversial statement about chief of selectors, Kris Srikkanth, implying that the former India opener was responsible for the sudden unexpected retirement of VVS Laxman from national duty.
Ganguly laid the blame for the middle-order batsman’s abrupt departure squarely on Srikkanth’s selection policies. According to Ganguly, the chief of selectors “has a big problem in communicating”. Ganguly stressed that a player like Laxman would not train hard if he had to keep himself fit just for two tests. The selectors had intended the New Zealand series to be Laxman’s last one playing for India but had failed to communicate their decision to the batsman until earlier this month. Ganguly questioned the wisdom of making any series a farewell series for a player without taking that player into confidence.
The former national captain added that Laxman’s decision had sent a “loud and clear” message to the selectors. Ganguly felt that Laxman would not have taken his decision to quit abruptly had the selectors communicated with him earlier. according to Ganguly, the selectors were not keeping the future of Indian cricket in view when they selected a team but instead indulged in a mere balancing act “by means of removing and adding somebody”.
Ganguly also blamed Dhoni for being remote and uncommunicative, referring to Laxman’s statement at the press conference to announce his retirement. On the occasion, Laxman had stated that he “found it difficult to reach Dhoni”.
The former India captain expressed unhappiness for the fact that Laxman had become a scapegoat for India’s recent loss of eight test matches abroad. He cited the examples of other players who had failed in Australia, such as skipper Dhoni, Gambhir and Ishant Sharma, thereby highlighting the unequal treatment meted out to Laxman by the selectors.
Ganguly castigated the selectors for their selection policy and said that if they continued with it, India would never be able to build a good side.
