The fourth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on September 18, 2012, when host Sri Lanka take on Zimbabwe in the opening match of the competition, at Hambantota.

Twelve teams –- three each in four groups – will compete for the trophy that was won by India in its inaugural year, followed by Pakistan and England in the subsequent editions. Hosts Sri Lanka are in Group C alongside Zimbabwe and South Africa, while England, India and Afghanistan comprise Group A, Australia, West Indies and Ireland make up Group B and Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh form Group D. The round robin group matches, with each time playing once against the others, will end on September 25, when Bangladesh and Pakistan meet at Kandy.

Once the group matches are completed, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the ‘Super Eights’ that will also be played in a round robin format in two groups, 1 and 2. Group 1  will have teams A1, B2, C1 and D2 (the suffixes 1 and 2 indicating winners and runners-up of the respective groups). The Super Eights will commence on September 27 and go on till October 2.

Colombo’s Premadasa Stadium will be the venue of the semi-finals and the final. In the first semi-final on October 4, the winners of the Super Eights Group 1 will take on the runners up from Group 2. The second semi-final will be held a day later between the Group 2 winners and the Group 1 runners up.

The tournament will culminate on October 7.
