EPL 2012-13 match preview: Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur
Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur in a very important premier league encounter this Sunday. Currently in seventh place and just three points behind their Merseyside rivals Everton, the Reds are in a decent run of form having trashed Swansea 5-0 and Wigan 4-0 in their last two league games.
Spurs are in a great run of form as they haven’t lost any of their last 12 matches and have won all of their last four including the fiercely contested North London derby against Arsenal. If they continue to replicate their current form they would not only beat Liverpool, they could well be the kings of London this season.
The fixture is crucial for Liverpool as the Anfield outfit would want to finish ahead of Everton this season and restore some of their lost pride. With Everton set to host previous season champion Manchester City in their next league encounter, this is probably the ideal time for Brendan Rodgers’ team to cash in. Tottenham, on the other hand, would try to catch up with second-placed Manchester City and extend the gap between their London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.
Team news:
Jermaine Defoe could return to the starting lineup for Spurs as he has attained complete match fitness and also came on as a substitute against Arsenal last weekend. Clint Dempsey, though, remains sidelined due to a calf injury. Sandro, Huddlestone and Kaboul also remain out of contention due to knee injuries.
Welshman Gareth Bale has been influential in recent months and once again he would be expected to rise up to the occasion. He has found the back of the net seven times in the last four league games. With 17 goals in the premier league, he is very much in contention for the Golden boot this season.
Liverpool would be happy to welcome Daniel Sturridge who missed the last game against Wigan. Long term absentees include Fabio Borini who is out with a shoulder injury and Kelly who is out with a knee injury.
Liverpool’s probable lineup: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Jose Enrique, Gerrard, Lucas, Joe Allen, Suarez, Sturridge.
Spurs probable lineup: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekoto, Dembele, Parker, Lennon, Bale, Sigurdsson, Defoe.
